Thomas was the son of Samuel and Nancy (Mathes) Clough. He was one of five children. His siblings were Mary Clough (b. Oct 3, 1819), James Monroe Clough (b. March 27, 1821), Samuel Adams Clough (b. Jan 2, 1823) and Cynthia Ann Clough (b. Dec 5, 1827).
Thomas Stevens Clough, b. May 23, 1825; m. July 6, 1851, Electa C. Glines. He was well-educated and taught several winters. He was employed during the construction of the B., C. and M. (Boston Concord & Montreal) Railroad as paymaster and superintendent of culverts and stonework.
He was the first Republican representative sent to the Legislature from Northfield in 1855. He moved to Mendota, Ill., in March, 1856, where he was an extensive farmer. Later he was a traveling salesman for a New York house. In 1875 he removed to Paw Paw, where he resided until his death, June 5, 1892.
They had a son, Thomas S. Jr., and a dau., Mrs. Geo E. Hyde.
