The following is a reprint from the Spring 1996, Volume 51, No. 2 Bulletin.
Donald M. Clough and his two sons, Donald and Robert, who are all surgeons, are also ardent fly fishermen.
Two years ago Donald and his sons went salmon fishing on the Ponoy River in Northern Russia above the Arctic Circle. They were accompanied by two other fishermen who were from Australia on the opening of this new fishing camp.
The fishing was fabulous — much more productive than fishing on the Penobscot River in Maine. Almost every cast was followed by a twenty pound salmon. Frequently each had a fish on at the same time. In five days more than 100 fish were caught — almost all were released. The native Russian guides were duly impressed, having never seen a fish caught using a dry fly. They were so impressed by these Americans that they named a productive stretch of water the “Clough Brothers’ Creek!”
Donald Clough assures us that this is a true story and not just another fisherman’s tall tale.
