Bernice H. Cluff

On the morning of Aug. 14, 2012, Bernice H. Cluff, 98, passed from her life of love and service to her next calling. Bernice was born May 6, 1914, in Salt lake City, Utah. She was the fourth child in a family of 10, born to Albert E. and Pearl Lewis Hall. She was raised in Salt Lake City and graduated from East High School. She has always had beautiful penmanship and was a talented typist and stenographer. She worked at the telephone company in Salt Lake from 1936 to 1938.She married Charles G. Cluff in the Salt Lake LDS Temple in 1938. They were later divorced. Their five children are Charles, Sue, Joy, Nancy and Robert. She has 25 grandchildren and 62 great-grandchildren. She helped raise two stepchildren, Don and Luana. From their family she has five grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, 20 great-great-grandchildren, and two great-great-great-grandchildren. She has lived in Salt Lake City and Cache Junction, Utah, for 20 years and has lived in Logan, Utah, for the past 50 Years. She enjoyed living at Williamsburg the last eight years and made many lasting friendships that she will always cherish. Bernice was instrumental in starting the Cache Area Sociable Group in 1965, and helped plan many dances and activities. She received training as a secretary and graduated from the manpower development training program at USU in 1969. She has worked for the IRS, Soil Conservation, and after 12 years retired from the U.S. Forest Service in 1983.She was quite a golfer in her day and loved it. Throughout her life she has enjoyed drama, music, dancing, genealogy and taking organ lessons. She loved spending time with her family, they were her proudest accomplishment. She was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She has served all of her life in many capacities of different organizations. She served a full-time LDS mission in the Missouri St. Louis Mission from 1985 to 1986 while in her 70s. Her mission president said she grew younger that year. She was fun! She had a quick wit and humor. She wrote and performed a rap/tap dance for her 85th birthday. She always made Christmas special and she still liked to dress up for Halloween. Daily crossword puzzles kept her mind sharp. We loved the riddles she wrote on our birthday cards. She was a wonderful cook and over the years she has been known for her yummy cinnamon rolls, lemon meringue and pumpkin pies, caramels and roast beef dinners. Mom led an extraordinary life. As a single mom she has accomplished much, sacrificed much, has been a true and faithful servant of the Lord and has been the greatest example and influence for good in our lives. Bernice was a wonderful mother and grandmother, always loving us, teaching us to serve the Lord and do what is right. She is survived by her children Sue (Jay) Brown of Centennial, Colo.; Joy (Joe) Larsen of Newton Utah, Nancy (Courtney) Obray of Avon, Utah, and Robert Cluff of North Logan, Utah; daughter-in-law Rebecca Cluff of Yakima, Wash., sister Phyllis Helton of Fullerton, Calif.; and many others who call her Grandma. She was preceded in death by her parents; four sisters, Edith Hall, Ruth Wall, Beth Tuttle and Gladys Davis; four brothers, Edward, Grant, Ivan and Frank Hall; son Charles G. Cluff; stepson Don Cluff; stepdaughter Luana Mitchell; son-in-law Scott Hadfield; grandson Reese Cluff; and two great-grandsons, Casey Larsen and Jonah Noble.
