Here’s a link to a free 46 minute video entitled The Civil War: Genealogical Records by Betty Foulk. http://www.mymcpl.org/genealogy/online-presentations
Foulk [March 2010] does a quick primer on the war, suggests a method to help determine if ancestor(s) might have served, and then discusses available resources. Although the focus is on Union soldiers; State Militia, and Confederate records are briefly discussed. The printable handout is her bibliography of websites and reference material. This video is good for the beginner to intermediate level, depending on how much experience the researcher has had with military records. Don’t have a computer of your own? Try visiting your local library, which might offer access to Ancestry.com and/or Heritage Quest. Sometimes local genealogical groups will use library computers to help others do their research. If there is a Family History Center nearby, they will have access to some of the resources mentioned in the video. As this country continues to observe the 150th anniversary [1861-1865] of the Civil War, this newsletter will continue to publish biographies of varying length about our Clough Cousins. ————————————– Nancy Corriveau Zebert leads a beginner genealogy group at the Hampden [MA] Senior Center, and has researched her great grandfather Clark’s three older brothers- two served for VT, and one for MI.
