While vacationing in the north west, my husband and I (#12680 in our new volume set) did some research in Spokane, WA and found the home of my great grandfather, Charles Francis Clough (#3575 in our new volume set), 9th Mayor of Spokane. His home was built in 1890 on Cannon Hill at 1406 9th Ave. Charles moved to Spokane after being in many major battles in the Civil War. After being mustered out of the army he went into business selling sewing machines and pianos. Sales took him to Chicago, San Francisco, and up to Spokane. He was a Republican elected to the City Council and then as Mayor. There was a vast amount of building done during his tenure as Mayor. The city limits were extended to five times its former size and a great amount of street railway work was begun. He gave the city a businesslike administration characterized by needed reforms and improvements, and his labors were substantial and beneficial elements in the city’s growth. In honor of my uncle, Charles Willis Clough (#8522 in our new volume set), I will be donating a set of The Genealogy of the Descendants of John Clough of Salisbury, Massachusetts (Revised 2009) to the DAR Library in Washington, D.C. at the 119th Continental Congress held in Washington, D.C. July 7-14, 2010 by members of Akansa Chapter National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR). Charles was a long time member of the JCGS and the publisher of the Clough books in 1952 and 1988.
