Few mothers have the privilege of visiting their children in three sections of the Far East as did Cousin Mildred, the widow of Dr. Ray W. Clough of Seattle during this past summer.
Her oldest son, Ralph, was transferred from London to Tarpei, Formosa where he is Deputy Chief of Mission, 2nd under the Ambassador. Seven years ago he was stationed in China and speaks the language fluently. His eldest son is a student at Stamford University in Palo Alto, California, intending to major in law.
After Tarpei, Mildred went to Tokyo, Japan to visit her daughter, Phyllis, and her husband and four children. Since then, they have been sent to Kobe, Japan, where the husband is now Commercial Officer in the Consulate.
Finally, Mildred spent a part of the summer on the Island of Java where the husband of the second daughter has been doing Engineering Geology this past year, but expects to return to the USA in 1962. Their son, 16, is in an American school in Switzerland, and their daughter at a high school in the Philippines. Mildred writes that the flowers and fruit on Java are amazing and the climate was not too hot.
At the University of California, Ray, Jr. is teaching graduate students, about half of whom are foreigners, in Structural Engineering. He is sent to far distant spots to lecture on Earthquake Engineering and on Electric Computers. Mildred returned to her home around Christmas and now anticipates visits from all four families in the coming summer.
